The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Raymond B. Cardwell (ASN: 39919580), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 4 July 1944 to 16 July 1944, in *****, France. As demolition man of his company which was supporting a regiment of infantry, Private Cardwell, throughout the stated period, repeatedly exposed himself to direct and flanking enemy fire, in complete disregard for his own safety, and succeeded in gapping hedgerows to enable the friendly tanks to continue the attack. His untiring and courageous devotion to duty, outstanding bravery and aggressiveness were of material assistance in the operations and reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
