The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harry Campbell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 337th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 May 1944, in Italy. When his attacking company, moving forward upon a strongly held enemy hill, was halted by intense fire from well prepared positions, First Lieutenant Campbell, realizing that further advance without greater fire support might prove too costly. He moved back to contact a tank company and obtain its assistance in overcoming the hostile positions. Mounting one of the tanks as it moved forward to attack, he pointed out the strongpoints halting the advance and directed his platoon as it moved on to close with the defending force under cover of devastating fire from the tank guns. The outstanding display of personal courage and fearless leadership shown by First Lieutenant Campbell in exposing himself to heavy enemy fire as he directed the attack resulted in the destruction of seven enemy emplacements, the killing of thirty and capture of eighty German soldiers, and the taking of an antitank gun and destruction of its crew. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Campbell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
