Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 143 (June 8, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Austin B. Campbell (ASN: 11015947), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. When he noticed an enemy machine gun position which had suddenly opened fire on his company, Private First Class Campbell fired back without hesitation. Inspired by his example his squad advanced behind him firing as they moved forward, succeeded in over-running the enemy, and captured seven who were manning the position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Campbell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
