The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Carmine Felitto (ASN: 1708328), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Binarville, France, 4 October 1918. When his platoon leader and a small detachment of men were surrounded by the enemy and subjected to a terrific artillery and machine-gun fire, Corporal Felitto volunteered and brought a message from his lieutenant to the company commander, bravely making his way through the enemy lines, despite the fact that he had seen other men killed while making the attempt. He brought the first message from the detachment, which had been cut off from the company for 18 hours.
