The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Harry M. Call (ASN: 42061502), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 September 1944, in Holland. When infantry troops were pinned to the ground by severe enemy fire, Sergeant Call and his machine gun platoon displaced forward in an attempt to alleviate the critical situation. By bringing surprise fire on the enemy, Sergeant Call managed to reach high ground to the right of the enemy, but was fired upon by an enemy machine gun from another direction. With great initiative, Sergeant Call placed his fire on this new danger and knocked out the enemy gun. Returning his fire o the original target, he made it possible for another friendly machine gun to reach his point of vantage, with the result that such withering fire was placed upon the enemy that the riflemen were able to capture the German position. This gallant display of initiative and tactical skill reflects the highest credit on Sergeant Call and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
