The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert V. Caldwell (ASN: 34729117), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 September 1944, in Holland. During an advance, enemy fire from four twenty millimeter guns and two machine guns halted forward progress. Sergeant Caldwell, acting without hesitation, left his sheltered position and fired his machine gun as he advanced to a position from where he could bring accurate fire directly into the enemy for twenty minutes, killing three of the enemy and wounding four others. The demoralized enemy withdrew allowing his company and battalion to advance and secure the objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Caldwell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
