The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph Calacione (ASN: 32063209), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 April 1945, in the vicinity of Siegen, Germany. When the enemy counter-attacked with three tanks and a company of infantry, Private First Class Calacione maintained constant fire with his anti-tank gun. Although heavy enemy fire was directed at him, he succeeded in knocking out two tanks before his gun was put out of action. He then picked up a bazooka and, firing from an exposed position, succeeded in holding off the enemy until his squad moved to a defensive position. The outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty of Private First Class Calacione are a credit to himself, his organization, and the military service.
