Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 104 (November 22, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edgar F. Byrns (ASN: 32216558), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Holland. Private Byrns was assigned as an ammunition bearer with an infantry unit engaged in an offensive against positions in an enemy-held town. A mine field, located within the city, presented a serious menace to the attacking elements. Private Byrns with several comrades voluntarily assumed the responsibility for clearing the mine field. While completing their task, the enemy opened fire on them with a machine gun which wounded one of the members. Private Byrns, with utter disregard for the danger involved, crawled to the aid of his wounded comrade. He had almost reached safety with the wounded man when he himself was seriously wounded, but continued in his heroic efforts until he reached a place of safety with his comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Byrns, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
