The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Clinton W. Butefish (ASN: 6865322), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 81st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Armored Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 February 1943 in the vicinity of ******, North Africa. His company was attacked by bombing and strafing from nine enemy planes. He remained at his post operating the vehicle’s radio until the planes attacked. He then voluntarily manned the 50 caliber machine gun and while under this severe attack fired at the enemy planes. With complete disregard for his own welfare he continued firing on the planes until he was killed by a bomb landing in his vehicle. The courage, daring and heroic actions, and complete devotion to this voluntary and self assumed duty displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Butefish reflect the finest traditions of the Armed Forces and are deserving of the highest praise.
