The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Bradford Butler, Jr. (ASN: 0-301504), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 258th Field Artillery Battalion (Separate), in support of the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 October 1944, in Germany. The Field Artillery Battalion which Lieutenant Colonel Butler was commanding was given the mission of delivering supporting fires to the efforts of this Division while engaged in making a penetration of the Siegfried Line. In order to obtain maximum results with his battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Butler established himself in an exposed forward observation post from which he directed operations. Despite wounds received in the ensuing engagement, Lieutenant Colonel Butler remained with his troops until the success of the mission was assured. The outstanding leadership and bravery exhibited by this courageous officer wee a material contribution in the successful penetration of the Siegfried Line. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Lieutenant Colonel Bradford reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
