The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman First Class Sammy A. Williamson (AFSN: 18486266), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life on 6 September 1961, on the flight line at Edwards Air Force Base, California. On that date, Airman Williamson was servicing one of a group of T-33A aircraft when an explosion occurred on an E-3 type oxygen servicing cart alongside the aircraft, slamming the operator to the ramp in a crumpled heap, and enveloping the cart in flames. With complete disregard for his own safety, Airman Williamson rushed through the flames and cut off the escaping oxygen gas, extinguishing the flames. Airman Williamson’s professional reaction, quick thinking and heroic action reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
