Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 72 (October 7, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant J. L. Bushnell (ASN: 39834669), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 July 1944. Sergeant Bushnell was serving as a member of a liaison party attached for duty with an infantry organization. During a fierce engagement, when considerable enemy mortar shells were dropping in the area, Sergeant Bushnell observed a comrade wounded. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Bushnell left his covered shelter and rushed to the side of the fallen soldier, rendered first aid and carried the suffering man to a place of safety where medical assistance was procured. By his heroic deed, Sergeant Bushnell saved a comrade from death. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Bushnell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
