Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 64 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles S. Bushaw, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on March 18, 1944 in Italy. When enemy shells set fire to an 81-mm. mortar and rifle ammunition dump in the middle of his Infantry Section’s positions, Private First Class Bushaw left his foxhole and ran 10 yards to the scene. Disregarding enemy shells which burst 10 to 20 yards from him as he worked, he threw the burning ammunition and cases into a nearby stream and extinguished the fire. He saved his fellow sections crews from possible injury and prevented further loss of valuable ammunition. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
