The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Charles S. Burton (ASN: 0-531364), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 October 1944, in Germany. During a sustained attack on the Siegfried Line, tanks were urgently needed to support infantry assault teams. The only route over which tanks could reach the Infantry had been destroyed by the enemy and it was necessary to construct a bypass. At great personal risk, First Lieutenant Burton made a reconnaissance of the area, selected a site for the bypass and directed the completion of the new route with a minimum of lost time. Throughout the operation the immediate area was subjected to heavy enemy artillery fire. As a direct result of First Lieutenant Burton’s demonstrated initiative and personal courage, tanks were able to give support to the infantry assault teams so that an important tactical objective was captured. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Burton reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
