The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William C. Evans (ASN: 588438), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 306th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bazoches, France, August 27 – 28, 1918. This soldier showed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty by attending the wounded without rest or relief, under heavy shell fire, until he fell unconscious from exhaustion. He remained at work for two days and a half under circumstances which called for the greatest determination and courage.
