The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Joe T. Bumgarner (ASN: 34008749), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 January 1945, in Belgium. During an attack, intense enemy fire was encountered and numerous casualties were suffered, including the company’s aid man. Technical Sergeant Bumgarner, under severe fire, went to the wounded aid man’s side and, after administering first aid, carried him eight hundred yards through deep snow to a place of safety. He then returned to the scene of action and serving as both aid man and litter bearer, he assisted in removing three other wounded men to safety despite enemy fire and the fact that his feet were frostbitten. Technical Sergeant Bumgarner’s unselfish actions save the lives of four of his comrades. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Bumgarner, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
