Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 163 (June 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Twyman Buchanan (ASN: 35706178), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 823d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 19 December 1944, in Belgium. When the enemy counterattacked in overwhelming numbers, Private First Class Buchanan gallantly manned his machine gun until nearly all his ammunition was expended despite the enemy nearly surrounding him. He picked up the gun and withdrew only after he had seen that his comrades had withdrawn safely. Private First Class Buchanan’s great heroism saved many of his comrades from death or capture. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Buchanan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
