The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Joseph E. Brown, Jr. (ASN: 0-577371), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 January 1945, in Belgium. Captain Brown, during intense enemy fire, exposed himself to the fire in contacting his men and organizing them, after which he reconnoitered the area for cover. Captain Brown then carried five wounded men across the open, exposed terrain, to comparative safety. He also administered what aid he could to the wounded. Captain Brown exemplified in this action outstanding courage and leadership which reflects great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
