The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Herbert W. Brown, Jr. (SN: 0-1298654), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Germany. When the enemy counterattacked First Lieutenant Brown’s company, which had been reduced in personnel due to heavy casualties, he moved through murderous fire to encourage his men. He directed their fire, improvised and selected advantageous positions for the automatic weapons and remained exposed directing and exhorting his men until he was captured by the enemy. First Lieutenant Brown’s gallant actions resulted in slowing the enemy attack to such a degree that it was soon halted. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Brown reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
