The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Edward J. Kelly (ASN: RA-31005845), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 1 September 1950, when the platoon position near Uiryong, Korea, was overrun by a large hostile force which engaged the platoon in fierce hand-to-hand combat, Sergeant First Class Kelly crawled through the hail of bursting hand grenades and small arms fire to bring up ammunition. He made several trips during the hours of darkness to enable his platoon to withstand the concerted attack until dawn when the enemy was forced to withdraw. Sergeant First Class Kelly’s outstanding bravery under such adverse combat conditions reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
