Headquarters, 2d Armored Division, General Orders No. 26 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Frederick C. Brems (ASN: 0-1010943), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 66th Armored Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. On the night of 1 March 1945, an enemy counterattack overran the outposts of Schiefbahn and penetrated into the town. During the initial confusion, and despite heavy enemy artillery and small arms fire, Lieutenant Brems dismounted from his tank, contacted the enemy, and disposed his tanks in the best positions. To keep a true picture of the rapidly changing situation he set out on foot again and found a Mark V tank within fifty yards of his position. He organized a bazooka team and led it to attack, causing the Mark V to withdraw. Throughout the night he repeatedly made reconnaissance trips through the area, despite the artillery and with full knowledge of the fact that any movement invited enemy sniping fire. Lieutenant Brems’ courage, devotion to duty, and professional skill were an inspiration to all. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
