The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Raymond P. Brazil (ASN: 0-1322763), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 and 4 July 1944, in France. Second Lieutenant Brazil led a combat patrol behind the enemy lines to capture or inflict casualties on the enemy. By his unusual display of leadership, the patrol was able to successfully perform its mission. Through his courageous action, at the risk of his life, his patrol killed four of the enemy and silenced an enemy machine gun. Though wounded by enemy fire, Second Lieutenant Brazil continued to show those fine qualities of leadership that were an inspiration to his men. Despite his wounds and the intense hostile fire, Second Lieutenant Brazil continued to direct his men in their successful action against the enemy and the evacuation of wounded members of the patrol to friendly soil. The actions of Second Lieutenant Brazil on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
