The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Joe H. Bratten (ASN: 34371949), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 July 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Bratton and his squad were attached to the 119th Infantry Regiment with the assignment of clearing a path through a minefield to allow the safe passage of infantry troops. As the squad advanced, they became disorganized due to an enemy concentration of artillery, mortar, and small arms fire. Staff Sergeant Bratten, with complete disregard for the hazards involved, went forward alone and cleared the mine field. This outstanding and courageous performance of duty resulted in the successful advance of the infantry troops which created a complete rout of enemy forces. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Bratten, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
