The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Nesbur G. Brandt (ASN: 33873294), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 10th Mountain Infantry Division, in action on 15 April 1945, near Serra d’Alano, Italy. During a fierce battle for commanding mountain positions, Private Brandt, a rifleman, saw one of his comrades wounded, and lying in the midst of an area swept by terrific artillery barrages. Without hesitation he left his position of cover and risked his life to carry the wounded man to safety. Returning to his squad, he found that the squad leader had been wounded. Again, he left shelter in an attempt to rescue his leader. As he crawled through the deadly barrage, he was struck and instantly killed. His splendid devotion to the welfare of others above himself will always be an inspiration to the men with whom he served, and Private Brandt’s heroic deeds are truly worthy of the finest traditions of the United States Army.
