The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles T. Boyle (ASN: 0-1310390), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 411th Infantry Regiment, 103d Infantry Division. On 27 April 1945 Captain Boyle leading a quartering party into the town of Mark Waldt, Germany, observed four of the enemy dash into a house on the outskirts of town as he approached. He dismounted, ordered his quartering party to cover and entered the house forcing the enemy to surrender. Dispatching these prisoners to the rear, Captain Boyle, with his interpreter, were advancing further when they observed a group of Germans fleeing into a wooded area. Advancing toward the group, the enemy opened fire seriously wounding the interpreter, knocking the pistol out of Captain Boyle’s hand and perforating his clothes in many places. Grabbing the rifle from his fallen interpreter, he advanced into the wooded area, killing one of the enemy, wounding several others and forcing the remainder to surrender. Placing these prisoners under guard, he assembled his quartering party, advanced upon the town and forced the surrender of 180 of the enemy forces occupying the town. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
