Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 37 (August 15, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Lewis M. Boyd (33089464), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Division Artillery, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 July 1944, in France. During a heavy bombing from enemy planes, Technical Sergeant Boyd heard a summons for medical aid. On his own initiative, he unhesitatingly left his shelter to notify the surgeon of the summons, while bombers of the second wave were still overhead. When he reached the aid station, a bomb hit less than 30 yards from him, killing the battalion surgeon. In spite of this experience, Technical Sergeant Boyd remained calm and unshaken and proved of inestimable value in restoring order. After locating aid men, Technical Sergeant Boyd, instead of finding shelter for himself, remained to direct members of the medical detachment to the wounded, thereby adding greatly to the efforts of those present. Such loyalty to his wounded comrades, courage, presence of mind, and complete disregard for his personal safety, reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
