The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter M. Bowers (ASN: 0-1325263), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. First Lieutenant Bowers was organizing his men for an attack upon the first objective east of the Rhine River when he was painfully wounded during an artillery concentration. Despite his pain, he reorganized the men and led them through a hail of fire to the objective. First Lieutenant Bowers would not consent to evacuation until he had made certain his platoon’s defenses were substantial. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Bowers, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
