Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 88 (May 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Sidney L. Bower (ASN: 13065022), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945 in Germany. As the weapons company, to which he was attached as Medical Aid Man, advanced without the support of riflemen in the early hours of the assault across the Rhine River, Private bower moved constantly among the several casualties, administering medical attention. Despite accurate enemy sniper and machine gun fire from a fortified dug-out he fearlessly attended the wounded at great risk to himself. Although one time the helmet was shot from his head and at another time the casualty he was carrying to safety was killed in his arms by enemy fire, he was successful in traversing the danger area many times and contributed to the saving of the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. The courage and great fidelity to duty displayed by Private Bower reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
