The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Andrew Edmiston, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 39th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Foret-de-Fere, France, 2 August 1918. While in command of a platoon of his regiment it was severely bombed by enemy planes and under intense artillery fire. Serious disorganization followed the bombing. Taking steps for the safety of his unit Lieutenant Edmiston went forward under heavy artillery fire and assisted in the reorganization of units and, though badly wounded, insisted upon the evacuation of all other wounded before accepting first aid for himself. His splendid example of courage and devotion inspired every man of his command.
