The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George W. Bouchard (ASN: 36128826), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 803d Tank Destroyer Battalion (Separate), in support of the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1944, in Germany. Sergeant Bouchard was serving at a tank destroyer commander during an attack upon the Siegfried Line. During the height of battle, Sergeant Bouchard voluntarily left his vehicle in the face of the heavy enemy fire still falling in an attempt to give aid to two of his wounded comrades who had received a direct artillery hit on their vehicle. Despite the enemy artillery, small arms, and machine gun fire, Sergeant Bouchard managed to reach the wounded men and was successful in carrying one back to his vehicle and then to an aid station. Sergeant Bouchard returned alone to the hazardous area and removed another wounded man to safety. The unbounded courage and unselfishness displayed by Sergeant Bouchard reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
