Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 131 (May 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Frank J. Boswell (ASN: 20422112), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 197th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 February 1945, in Germany. When his battery received heavy fire from enemy artillery, it became necessary to make calculations and compass readings so that accurate fire could be placed on the enemy positions. In spite of the extreme hazards and danger from the shells still falling, Staff Sergeant Boswell remained in an exposed position making observations and compass readings. Although he was seriously wounded, he courageously refused to be evacuated until his report was turned in. Staff Sergeant Boswell’s heroic actions reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
