The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Bernard Bossert (ASN: 36865501), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 197th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action on 24 March 1945 in Germany. Private First Class Bossert crossed the Rhine River with a reconnaissance party and drove them through intermittent artillery fire into a town. Due to a heavy concentration of enemy artillery fire, which ignited several buildings and a vehicle loaded with ammunition, the party was forced to seek safety in a nearby building. The ammunition started to explode and Private First Class Bossert, attempting to move his vehicle away from the burning ammunition truck, was forced back. Despite the hazardous situation he again left cover, reached his vehicle, and succeeded in moving it to a more protected position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Bossert, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
