The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Gilchrist C. Booth (ASN: 39913422), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 February 1945, in Germany. When Private booth noticed that a tank was burning from enemy fire and the tank commander was hanging out the turret, wounded and unconscious, he braved the terrible heat and brought the commander to safety. He raced to the tank again in an attempt to save another member of the crew when the ammunition in the turret exploded and forced him to see cover. Private booth’s great heroism in braving the imminent explosion of the ammunition saved the tank commander’s life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
