(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: First Lieutenant (Armor) Donald L. Bonawitz, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 1st Armored Division in Italy during World War II. First Lieutenant Bonawitz dismounted from his tank under fire to remove 40 mines which lay in the path of his platoon. Although he was later wounded, he refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his platoon through the remainder of the day. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
