The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Jack Blohm (ASN: 0-[1174782), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Division Artillery, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 August 1944, in France. An infantry battalion was isolated during a vigorous enemy counterattack, and air supply was the only available means of supplying critical needs. Major Blohm, Artillery Air Officer, voluntarily undertook to determine the most feasible air routes to the battalion and although he knew that the enemy possessed a concentrated strength of both light and heavy anti-aircraft weapons in the vicinity, he flew his slow and fragile observation plane on four missions of approximately an hour each probing these anti-aircraft defenses at various altitudes, offering himself as a target in order to locate hostile defenses. As a result of the information secured by his gallant action, a route for air supply was discovered. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Blohm, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
