The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal James F. Dunne (ASN: 126794), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 7th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Very, France, 4 October 1918. After three of his operators were killed and he himself was wounded, Corporal Dunne refused to be evacuated, but remained at his switchboard, maintaining uninterrupted communication.
