The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Chemical Corps) William R. Blessing (ASN: 0-1037395), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 92d Chemical Mortar Battalion, 95th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 April 1945. Lieutenant Blessing rushed into an open field under a hail of sniper and bullets to set up a machine gun and cover the withdrawal of the men of his platoon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
