Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 66 (October 1, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private] Timothy L. Birt (ASN: 33710720), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 6 August 1944 to 12 August 1944, in France. Sergeant Birt was serving as a runner with an infantry unit engaged in a fierce and sustained engagement with determined enemy forces. During the long battle, and constantly under heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire, Sergeant Birt carried messages, orders, ammunition, and food from place to place, wherever ordered. In addition to his regularly assigned duties, he helped evacuate a seriously wounded comrade from an open field under direct observation from the enemy, and on two occasions helped litter bearers evacuate other casualties. During a critical stage in the fighting, Sergeant Birt voluntarily acted as an observer in order to successfully adjust mortar fire on the enemy troops dispositions. The personal courage and superior soldierly attributes displayed by Sergeant Birt during this period wee of inestimable value to his unit. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
