The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Hammond D. Birks (ASN: 0-7184), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 June 1944, in France. Under continuous small arms fire and intermittent artillery fire, Colonel Birks personally led the assault of his regiment which was participating int its first battle and against skillfully-led German troops who fought with great determination. By his forceful leadership, skill, and courage, Colonel Birks maintained the impetus of the attack, carrying it to a successful conclusion. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Birks, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
