The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Simon J. Bertulis (ASN: 0-1303647), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, in France. Lieutenant Bertulis was in command of a leading infantry platoon attacking across a canal. During the action, intense hostile fire wounded Lieutenant Bertulis painfully and seriously, Despite these handicaps, Lieutenant Bertulis continued in his attack, directing the efforts of his remaining men until the objective was attained, and the mission accomplished. These gallant actions and the leadership exhibited by Lieutenant Bertulis against seemingly insuperable circumstances, reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
