The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald L. Berry (ASN: 0-1825729), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 December 1944, in the vicinity of *****. Lieutenant Berry led his platoon in a coordinated attack against a strong pocket of German resistance. During the early stages of the advance his men were pinned down by enemy machine gun crossfire. Aware that the majority of his men were experiencing their initial engagement, Lieutenant Berry shouted encouragement to them and personally led them forward. Halfway to his objective, he was caught by a burst of machinegun fire and killed. His gallant courage and outstanding leadership gave confidence to his men and proved a great source of inspiration to them.
