The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Charles Berra (ASN: 0-24888), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Executive Officer of the 2d Battalion, 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action in the European Theater of Operations, in 1944. Captain Berra led a successful attack against pillboxes and entrenchments of the Siegfried Line. His unprecedented plan of action organized assault and support teams and he led several assaults which resulted in the capture of 22 enemy positions in two days, and in the breaking of a portion of the defensive line. Captain Berra was killed in a subsequent battle. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Berra, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
