(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Medical Administrative Corps) Paul Berkos (ASN: 0-1545229), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 March 1945, in the vicinity of Gluel, Germany. Several attempts to reach a seriously wounded man proved unsuccessful. Exposing himself to enemy sniper and artillery fire, Lieutenant Berkos voluntarily secured a jeep and drove to the casualty. Although wounded by shrapnel, he successfully evacuated the wounded man while under a furious hail of small arms fire. Lieutenant Berkos’ prompt action and gallantry contributed largely to saving the man’s life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
