Headquarters, 2d Armored Division, General Orders No. 45 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Armor) Sten E. Bergstedt (ASN: 0-291699), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 66th Armored Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 24 September 1944. On that day, Captain Bergstedt commanded an armored patrol operating in the vicinity of the city of Scherpenseel in Germany when his unit came under intense anti-tank fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety he pulled his tank into a firing position to increase the fire power of the patrol and in so doing received a direct hit in the turret which proved fatal. His courageous action resulted in several tanks being able to maneuver into a position protected from enemy fire, thus undoubtedly saving the lives of numerous soldiers. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
