Headquarters, 88th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 76 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Erwin H. Bender, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 88th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Po Valley, Italy, during World War II. Sergeant Bender’s squad was proceeding in armored vehicles when it encountered a strongly defended road block. Staff Sergeant Bender immediately dismounted his men, ran forward in front of his squad and let loose with hand grenades. He killed one German with a Tommy Gun and the next three by stepping into a fortified house that had just received four of his grenades. The 14 remaining Germans in the house surrendered. He continued to lead the attack after dark, killing two more enemy. Staff Sergeant Bender’s actions were largely responsible for the success of his task force in the raid. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
