The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Dennis D. Bellmore (ASN: 37567424), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 410th Infantry Regiment, 103d Infantry Division. On 25 January 1945, near ****, France, the machine gun of Private Bellmore’s squad jammed when an attacking enemy approached to within 50 yards of their position. Wounded by hostile fire, he ordered the gun crew to seek safety as he covered their withdrawal with pistol fire. Remaining alone and lying in an exposed position he succeeded in holding off the enemy, until he was fatally wounded by hostile automatic weapons fire. Private Bellmore’s actions, which enabled his squad to escape, reflected the highest traditions of the military service.
