The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Chester E. Beayon (ASN: 31403280), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 October 1944, in Germany. During an attack on the Siegfried Line by his infantry unit, Sergeant Beayon displayed outstanding courage and initiative that are well worthy of recognition. He voluntarily braved extremely heavy enemy artillery and small arms fire for a distance of several hundred yards in an effort to bring up more ammunition for his unit. On his way to the rear, he cleverly captured four of the enemy. Also, during this hazardous mission, he discovered several wounded comrades whom he assisted to an aid station. Sergeant Beayon returned successfully to his unit with the ammunition and then manned a machine gun. These outstanding accomplishments reflect the highest credit on Sergeant Beayon and the Armed Forces of the United States.
