(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) William Lee Herold (ASN: 0-19919), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion, attached to the 80th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France, during the attack on the Argentan-Falaise Pocket on 20 August 1944. During the advance, just east of Argentan, a small stream held up the forward movement. To expedite the crossing, Lieutenant Colonel Herold organized the building of a ford using nearby fencing materials. While thus engaged, enemy artillery fire targeted the forward command group and all five were wounded, Lieutenant Colonel Herold mortally. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Herold, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
