Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 69 (October 4, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John J. Baum (ASN: 38376971), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 823d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Corporal Baum was serving as a gunner in a tank destroyer organization engaged in action supporting an infantry force attempting to repel a determined counterattack launched by a desperate enemy who was attempting to divide American forces in France. From a hidden position, Corporal Baum and his companions were manning a gun when some enemy tanks approached. After one of the hostile tanks had been knocked out, the other tanks began a flanking movement, attempting to locate the concealed gun. Knowing that they were risking their lives with fire which would at once betray their positions, Corporal Baum and his comrades unhesitatingly opened fire, destroying a second tank, before fire from the flanking armor forced a withdrawal. The personal courage and determined devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Baum were an inspiration to his fellow soldiers. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
