Headquarters, 3d Armored Division, General Orders No. 23 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Armor) Emil D. Bartosh (ASN: 0-1011468), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with as Commanding Officer of a company in an Armored Regiment of the 3d Armored Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 20 September 1944. As his company moved toward its objective, three tanks were damaged in rapid succession, including his own tank. Dismounting from his tank, in the face of intense enemy artillery and direct fire, Captain Bartosh assisted in the evacuation of the crew and personally evacuated two of the wounded to a place of comparative safety. With total disregard for his own personal safety, Captain Bartosh exposed himself to enemy fire for long periods of time, personally lading his tanks on foot to positions from which they could deliver effective fire on the enemy which resulted in successfully destroying one Mark V tank and an anti-tank gun. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Bartosh, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
